The New Zealand Farmers Weekly | Market Wrap
Schedule drop brings price drop
06-02-2012 | Not Specified
As would be expected, schedule drops affected results at FRANKTON's
prime fixture. All classes of cattle eased although the difference was
not dramatic, NZ Farmers Livestock report shows.
Prime cattle, boner cows and works bulls fell in value at STRATFORD
last Tuesday, with farming cattle easing slightly.
The on-farm sale of approx 5000 store lambs and 1400 five year ewes
at PAPARATU STATION in the Gisborne-Wairoa region proved an
outstanding success. In spite of schedule drops and other negative
factors, buyers attended from Te Kuiti, Rotorua and local districts -
and they had come to buy.
There was a small yarding of prime lambs offered at BALCLUTHA on
Wednesday, selling on par with recent sales, said PGG Wrightson agent
Barry Osborne. The prime ewe yarding was of average quality and sold
accordingly, with limited demand.
NORTHLAND
Around 650 head were yarded at KAIKOHE on Thursday, with the market
softening across most classes, probably because of schedule drops.
The best of the 2-year steers, a mixture of Charolais, Simmental and
Angus, sold at $2.24-$2.26/kgLW, with dairy-cross steers fetching
$2.10-$2.15/kgLW.
Eighteen-month steers, Angus, Friesian and a few exotics, made
$2.25-$2.35/kgLW.
Weaner beef-cross steers were $2.60-$2.70/kgLW. A light yarding of
18-month bulls, mostly Friesian and beef-cross, sold at
$2.20-$2.30/kgLW. A line of weaner Friesian bulls went for $5.55/kgLW,
with others fetching $4-$4.35/kgLW.
Two-year heifers - whiteface, Hereford-cross and Charolais-cross -
made $2-$2.18/kgLW. Hereford-cross, Simmental-cross and
Charolais-cross 18-month heifers sold at $2.20-$2.30/kgLW.
Heavy boner cows made $1.65-$1.70/kgLW, mediums $1.30-$1.40/kgLW and
light $1.10-$1.15/kgLW.
COUNTIES
Store cattle numbers dropped dramatically at TUAKAU last Thursday,
with just 400 cattle yarded, PGG Wrightson agent Roy Allen said.
The offering included only one pen of 30-month steers. Averaging
521kg, these sold at $2.26/kgLW, or $1160. Twenty-month whitehead
steers, 456kg, made $2.33/kgLW, with lighter whiteheads at 367kg
earning $2.50/kgLW. Angus-Friesian steers at 373kg returned
$2.28/kgLW. Fifteen-month whitehead steers, 268-277kg, traded at
$2.62-$2.68/kgLW, with 268kg Angus-Friesians making $2.30/kgLW. In the
weaner section, whitehead steers at 195kg earned $605 and 152kg steers
fetched $590. Whitehead steers, 101kg, sold at $495 and
Angus-Friesians, 125kg, made $500. Weaner Friesian bulls at 123kg
earned $430.
Allen said the 20-month heifer market was stronger than the previous
week. Whitehead heifers weighing 353 to 379kg traded at
$2.23-$2.29/kgLW, or $800-$870, and Hereford-cross red and brindles,
322-358kg, returned $2.18-$2.21/kgLW. Angus-Friesian weaner heifers at
119kg fetched $418.
About 300 cattle were offered at last Wednesday's prime sale and
Allen said the market was pretty strong, even with recent schedule
drops. While steers were back by around 5c/kgLW, heifers sold at
similar rates to the previous week, he said.
Heavy prime steers at 735-794kg made $2.29-$2.32/kgLW, with Angus
steers at 745kg making $2.37/kgLW. Steers in the 635-671kg range
earned $2.30-$2.32/kgLW and 563-600kg steers returned
$2.25-$2.29/kgLW.
Prime heifers, 500-565kg, traded at $2.26-$2.31/kgLW and 432-480kg
sorts fetched $2.18-$2.24/kgLW. Heavy beef cows, 727-830kg, made
$1.70-$1.86/kgLW and other beef cows at 515-595kg made a similar rate
at $1.70-$1.78/kgLW. Boner cows were in short supply. Heavy types sold
at $1.60-$1.65/kgLW, with mediums making $1.45-$1.49/kgLW.
Hereford bulls, 600-665kg, sold at $2.36-$2.50/kgLW and 627kg Angus
bulls earned $2.48/kgLW. Jersey bulls at 500-575kg returned
$2.19-$2.25/kgLW.
At the weekly sheep sale, which was moved to Tuesday because of the
long weekend, heavy prime lambs sold up to $152 and the best of the
prime ewes made $110-$115.
BAY OF PLENTY
It wasn't a big day at RANGIURU on Wednesday, said Rod Kamphorst of
PGG Wrightson, but the market was still good at the adjusted levels
for both cattle and sheep. The lower levels are allowing traders into
the market. Very heavy older steers at 632kg and 719kg made $1445 and
$1655, $2.30/kgLW. Steers over 480kg returned $1115-$1305,
$2.24-$2.25/kgLW and the 400-480kg range brought $950-$1000,
$2.10-$2.38/kgLW.
Useful yearling steers traded at $690-$925, $1.73-$2.49/kgLW. Very
few heifers were penned. The best sale was 440kg heifers at $965,
$2.19/kgLW with another 381kg lot selling at $855, $2.244/kgLW.
Numbers were bigger in the older bull section, the bigger bulls
ranging from $1200-$1830, $2.33-$2.60/kgLW and a handful of bulls over
250kg fetched $710-$805, $2.15-$2.54/kgLW. Prime bulls covered an
almost identical range of $1115-$1860, $2.21-$2.50/kgLW. Top prime ox
fetched $1130-$1750, $2.20-$2.41/kgLW. Heavy boner cows went to a high
of $1290, $1.90/kgLW but very light cows made just $395-$525,
$1.00-$1.51/kgLW.
A decent entry of prime and store lambs produced a top price of
$147.50 for primes and store lambs were bought from $70. Breeding ewes
made to $170 for 2-tooths while store ewes started at $85.
WAIKATO
As would be expected, schedule drops affected results at FRANKTON's
prime fixture. All classes of cattle eased although the difference was
not dramatic, NZ Farmers Livestock report shows. All pens of ox sold
at $2.23-$2.28/kgLW. Six lines out of the eight offered tipped the
scales at 610-685kg and made $1372-$1565, the other two pens returning
$1175 and $1293. $1429 was paid for the heaviest heifers, 665kg at
$2.15/kgLW. Heifers over 500kg sold at $1138-$1226, $2.17-$2.21/kgLW,
those just under 500kg making $1023-$1110, $2.24-$2.26/kgLW while
lighter again returned $836-$900. Very heavy prime cows at 795kg
realised $1462, $1.84/kgLW, The best of the boner cows made $1047,
$1.54/kgLW, most of the rest bringing $616-$925, $1.40-$1.53/kgLW, and
the very light Jerseys making $414-$564, $1.14-$1.36/kgLW. $1824 was
paid for 800kg Hereford bulls, $2.28/kgLW, and various other breeds
made $1127-$1601, $2.21-$2.39/kgLW.
Best prime lambs remained high at $130-$153 and heavy ewes were $115-$135.
Numbers were down but quality was better in the cattle pens at
Frankton's store sale on Wednesday. 250 head drew an average number of
buyers for what was a yarding of mainly 2-year and yearling steers
with a few yearling heifers and some odds and ends.
A small line of 562kg South Devon steers topped the day at $1265,
$2.25/kgLW. $1025-$1165 was recorded several times for the better
weights, $2.24-$2.28/kgLW and $920-$985 secured lines weighing better
than 400kg, $2.11-$2.21/kgLW. All yearling steers came within a narrow
weigh-band of 326-371 kg and returned $905-$945 for good quality,
$2.55-$2.67/kgLW with others at $785-$870.
Better grown yearling heifers made $805-$840, $2.24-$2.28/kgLW. Light
heifers, less than 300kg. brought $455-$488, $1.86-$2.01/kgLW.
Yearling bulls sold well, three lots making $905, $950 and $1060, the
latter being 432kg Charolais, $2.56/kgLW. The same number of 2-year
bulls fetched $1080-$1610, 649kg Angus taking top money at $2.48/kgLW.
Only one pen of 2-year heifers went at $1030, $2.21/kgLW.
POVERTY BAY
The on-farm sale of approx 5000 store lambs and 1400 five year ewes at
PAPARATU STATION in the Gisborne-Wairoa region proved an outstanding
success. In spite of schedule drops and other negative factors, buyers
attended from Te Kuiti, Rotorua and local districts - and they had
come to buy.
The sale opened on 5-year Romdale ewes, the top 708 selling to a
local incorporation for $170, the two next lines making $150 and the
final lot sold at $141. The ewes were well presented and represented
very sound buying.
The sale of lambs was outstanding, the bench relishing being able to
purchase big lines of hill country lambs that would thrive. The first
line consisted of 1005 Romdale ram lambs, a cut of 400 selling at
$106.50, the balance of 605 taken by the under-bidder at $106. 317
blackface lambs made $107.50 and the next complete line of 1341 male
lambs fetched $103.50. Other lines went at $88-$104.50. Estimated CPK
rates would have been $3.66-$3.92/kgLW.
It was the Romdale ewe lambs that stopped the show. The bidding was
frantic for the best 341, the line eventually selling to a Te Kuiti
buyer for $130 while the second cut of 161 made $112.50. These lambs
would have been over $4.60/kgLW, illustrating the intense interest in
ewe lambs big enough for mating. In total 4960 lambs averaged $102.50.
The sale was conducted by PGG Wrightson.
There was a very small offering at MATAWHERO on Friday, with just
1010 total sheep penned. As was expected there were market
adjustments, most noticeable in the prime section and the store ewes.
Butchers ewes dropped to $100 and trade lambs lost a little ground,
selling at $91-$121.50.
The store lamb pens held only 259 head. Values were a shade easier
but there is sufficient demand to sustain a sound market. All offered
were mixed sex, the better lines making $98-$114.50 and mediums,
$85-$92 with a few at $66-$69.
A very attractive line of 236 5-year ewes with excellent teeth looked
good buying at $162, another good medium lot fetching $134 and some
2-tooth ewes brought $110-$148.

HAWKE'S BAY
WAIROA vendors produced 900 attractive cattle last Tuesday, which
reflected the grass supplies. The majority were Angus or Angus/
Hereford but there were some excellent examples of Charolais and other
breeds. The bench was small but powerful, an air of hesitancy evident
following the schedule drops. Nevertheless it was a good sound sale,
the general quality adding a few dollars per head. An outstanding line
of older steers sold at $1600, an estimated $2.38/kgLW. Very good
lines of 2½-year steers made $1220-$1300, $2.47-$2.53/kgLW and good
medium steers fetched $1110-$1145, $2.412-$2.46/kgLW. 1½-year steers
were wanted, the best going at $1005-$1100, $2.48-$2.86/kgLW, while

traded at $1025, $2.22/kgLW with a few smaller sorts making $690-$780.
Rangitikei, Hawke's Bay and local buyers took part.
It was a quiet day in the cattle rostrum at STORTFORD LODGE with 250
head displayed, many of them from the Chatham Islands. The market was
"OK" reported Laurence Redshaw of LI Redshaw Ltd, prices reflecting
the quality as did the CPK rates.
Some of the better lines made $2.85-$3.02/kgLW and $632-$790 while
others were $1.81-$2.47/kgLW, $575-$680. Top price was $985 which was
paid for 458kg Friesians, $2.15/kgLW. Yearling heifers sold freely,
$922 offered for 386kg whiteface heifers and $800 was exceeded several

weighing 236-331kg, $2.24-$2.74/kgLW. A couple of pens of weaner bulls
changed hands at $292 and $382, $2.75 and $2.96/kgLW and one lot of
weaner heifers made $255, $2.41/kgLW.
The sheep pens gave buyers more choice with over 2600 store lambs.
There were plenty of bidders for them and values remained at a very
satisfactory level considering the negative signals from processors.
Good solid mixed sex, over 35kg, went to $124.50, a slightly lighter
line making $105. The best of the male lambs sold at $106-$110 and
there were sales at $94.50-$97 and $75. Estimated CPK rates were
$3.68-$3.80/kgLW.
