US milk prices stabilise, profits improve

Dairy farmers in the United States (US) are being paid more for their milk than they were a year ago, but prices vary from state to state.  High feed costs are limiting profitability but in general farmers are better off now than they were a year ago.

Overall the net impact of the higher milk prices and increased feed prices is that US farmers are better off.  The milk:feed ratio stood at 1.53 for the month of June 2013, an improvement of nearly 11% from a year ago.
