A fire that killed 50,000 hens and destroyed two Zeagold laying sheds in Orini, near Huntly, in early February remains under investigation.

The fire ripped through the sheds early on February 6.

In a statement, Zeagold said it is still awaiting a report from Fire Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) on the cause of the fire.

Zeagold is NZ’s largest egg producer and operates nine farms throughout the country. Its 1.16 million laying hens produce about 540,000 dozen eggs a week, which are sold domestically under the Woodland and Farmer Brown brands.

Orini farm – a barn-laying operation – has been running for about two years. Two sheds out of 12 on the site where destroyed in the fire.

Zeagold chief executive John McKay said the company has not been badly affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, and his thoughts are with those who have been.

“One of our farmers had his egg-grading facilities impacted, but we are working closely with him to ensure he has access to the resources he needs so we can still get those eggs to market,” McKay said.
