And if this Government’s first term was about setting the policy that it believes will help farming thrive, this next will be about working with industry to bring everyone in it along for the ride.
In general, farmers are on board with environmental progress and sustainable land management. But they’re struggling to see how they can meet these new standards and stay profitable in the short and medium term.
O’Connor, along with Environment Minister David Parker and new Conservation Minister Kiri Allan, need to show a clear path that the industry can buy into. Good leaders bring the team with them and farming needs that leadership now.
