Now for sale, the Quailburn property includes 720ha that has been developed into lucerne and grass mixes before flowing up on to the lower hill country direct-drilled or oversown.
Lucerne has been a key factor for the farming operation on the flats and lower hill country, with the fine, sandy loams ideal for the crop and other supplementary feed crops. Brassica and ryecorn were also grown for winter and summer.
Barry Meikle from Southern Wide Real Estate said the property has been run as a trading block that buys in lambs to finish. In the past few years the owners have had an extensive development programme in place aimed at improving the infrastructure, pastures and stock water to increase production as well as allow better stock movement.
Good-quality fencing borders the farm as well as internally for 41 paddocks and five hill blocks which all receive good water from either natural creeks or the property’s own scheme.
Central lanes and smaller paddocks lead into the stock handling facilities. A feature of the property is a four-stand woolshed built six years ago and the 429sq m covered yard area attached to it. Quality timber cattle yards also feature.
Irrigation now provides potential for the next lift in production and Meikle said this would give it security for establishing winter feed, supplementary feed and finishing pastures. The consent with two neighbours allowed the property to irrigate 95ha from a stream and that should enable it to carry another 1000 stock units.
The deadline for the private treaty sale is November 15. It can be viewed at www.southernwide.co.nz ID SWDR1113.
