Butter production for January 2016 was 175.7 million pounds, up +1.6% (about 3 million pounds) on December but starts the year back -2.1% (about 4 million pounds) on January 2015.
Total cheese production in the US for January reached 1 billion pounds. This was -2.6% (about 27m pounds) below December production but +2.6% (about 26m pounds) above January 2015 levels.American type cheese production was up +0.3% on December and +0.9% on January 2015 levels to 400 million pounds. Of these cheddar production increased by +1.4% (about 4m pounds) on December and January 2015 to 296 million while production of other American types decreased by -2.7% (about 3m pounds) from December and -0.4% from January 2015 to 104 million.
Italian type cheese production totalled 435 million pounds, -5.4% (about 25m pounds) below December 2015 and +2.2% (about 10m pounds) above January 2015. Of this total, mozzerella production was back on December by -6.2% (about 22m pounds) 336m pounds and slightly up on January levels by 0.3% (about 1 million pounds).
Non-fat dry milk (human) production was 136 million pounds, back -9.7% from December and -17.4% back on January 2014. While production is back, manufacturers end-of-month stocks were 226 million pounds which is up 10.9% from December but still back -5.7% on January 2015.
There was increased production of skimmed milk powder for January reaching 51 million pounds. This is up 18% on December and 17% on January 2015.
