The challenge of working on a dairy farm has always appealed to Central Plateau Dairy Trainee of the Year Ruth Hone.

“It’s definitely the unpredictability on a daily basis,” she said.

“I love the diversity of it and the progression opportunities. You have to be a master of all trades.”

She was raised on a dairy farm at Rotorua. At Massey University she studied a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in agriculture, then worked for two years in Hawke’s Bay as second in charge (2IC) and a training manager.

The 24-year-old travelled for six months last year, then returned to a job as farm assistant on a 250-cow farm at Marotiri, near Taupo, owned by Michelle and Ross Davison.

In her travels, it was exciting to see the huge role New Zealand played in feeding the world, she said.

“Seeing our products in Vietnam I thought it was amazing, I was so proud.”

Her goal is to be lower-order sharemilking within four years and she’s already investing in stock to raise the capital.

She also took out the T H Enterprises Farming Knowledge Award and Rotorua District Council Leadership Award. Second place went to Rotorua farm assistant Samuel Travers. Whakamaru 2IC Gerard van der Mark placed third and won the DairyNZ Practical Skills Award.
